I needed my hardwood floors repaired due to pet stains. The repairs were in the middle of the room, so it was not an easy job. I had extra hardwood from the original installation, and Ruben was able to repair the damaged wood back to its original state! Ruben's work is impeccable.
Ruben did an exceptional job with installing flooring, refinishing the original floor and incorporation transitions. He also gave me practical advice on how to care for my floors. I will be using him in the future for all my flooring needs.
Ruben did a fantastic job on our wood floors. We had lots of scratches and general wear and tear on our wood floors and H&R made them look shiny and new. He explained the whole process in advance and got the job done in the time frame discussed. Wouldn't hesitate to use again.

We have worked with H&R Hardwoods for years. They have installed wood floors in our house during two separate remodels and several rental properties. I cannot say enough about how Ruben(Ben) works with you to ensure you are getting the product and installation you desire all at a great price!! We have recommended him to multiple friends and family members all who have been delighted with the workmanship.
You will not regret choosing H&R Hardwood Floors. They do excellent quality work for a more than a fair price. These guys are great!
Normally I do a tremendous amount of research before hiring any contractor, but when it came time to do my floors I did not have time to do my normal due diligence. Originally I planned on putting them in myself, but ran out of time on this project. I called around looking for someone who could come out fast and at a reasonable price. Most of the companies I called were either overpriced or could not do the job in my time-frame. Finally I found Ruben Pena, owner of H&R Hardwood Floors, through Craigslist. We talked briefly and he came out the next day for an estimate.
Initially I was a bit concerned as Ruben is quite young and seemed a bit nervous. Add to that I have apprehension about anyone listing their services on Craigslist. That being said, after talking with Ruben for some time, I realized this guy really knew his business well and was passionate about the work he did.
Ruben and his crew did not let me down. They installed more than 1000sq. ft. of Engineered wood in my house. Their attention to the little details made all the difference. I am more than happy with this installation. In the end I am glad I didn't have time to do it myself as they surely did a much higher quality job than I could have ever done on my own.
You will not go wrong if you hire H&R!
Ruben and his team did an excellent job on my 140 year old floors. They were in horrible shape and Ruben practically made them look new. He has done this one before on a another property as well. He's a master of his craft.
Ruben and his co-workers did a magnificent and masterful job on 70 year old wooden floors in my 1950 house in North Loop neighborhood. They were covered with very old carpet installed by the original owners. I had them quote on a complete renovation project for 2 bedroom, hallway, and living room and theirs was very competitive. My daughter had them renovate the original heartwood longleafe pine floors in her 1920 home in Hyde Park which is a contributing structure to the HP historical district. Ruben was patient with me as he explained the way they would do the work, showed me many different samples of colors they could stain the old floors, and kept me up to date throught the three day project and thoroughly explained everything. When the carpet was pulled up it exposed very dark and damaged wood. When they sanded it, they expose the true and natural color of the floors, which was the opposite end of the color spectrum from the original: a very light, almost Scandanavian color, which I decided to keep. They always showed up on time, kept the dust and debris to an amazing bare minimum, and finished on time and budget. Ruben was personable and businesslike with no b.s., and he and his co-workers were polite and efficient. We decorated the house to match the floors. I highly recomment H&H for the fantastic results of their very knowledgeable, masterful, and exquisite work. In the past I have had the same kind of work done on five houses, and although the results were fine, no one did it better than these guys.
We just bought an older home (built 1938) in Hyde Park that needed some floor repairs and couldn't get anyone [reputable] to take the job; we had heard wonderful things from our home inspector and realtor alike about H&R Hardwoods, but they didn't have any openings before our move in. Luckily for us, Ruben and his crew had a last minute cancellation that allowed him to come out and get our floors done before move in. While the scope of the work ended up being larger than anticipated, the end results have been MUCH better than we had ever hoped for.
We had hoped to get the few places in need of repairs fixed and, if need be only the areas that were repaired, re-stained to match, but Ruben patiently explained the process and said that though he could do a version of our uninformed idea of how to fix it, he could much easier fix everything and re-stain/seal all the floors for not that much more and for a much better appearance. Ruben was absolutely correct and we're so glad we let him run with picking a stain with only the limited guidance of "close to the original, but perhaps cooler toned". Our floors are gorgeous now and our favorite part of the house. H&R Hardwood Floors really are artist and the wood floors throughout our house look like a masterpiece... Bonus points: Ruben left the custom stain he mixed for our floors for future scuffs and (due to a small scratch when the movers installed the washing machine) we got to test it out to great results: it worked perfectly and you can't see the scuff the movers left.
If you can get on H&R Hardwood Floors schedule, then I wouldn't hesitate to book them. They were professional, courteous, fast, and left no mess -- only beautiful results!

I had a patchwork quilt of floor materials and colors, with 5 colors and 4 types of wood. I wanted a consistent look to the floors and Rueben pulled it off. He water popped the pine floors to draw out the grain and take the color better. The pine looks like some exotic wood now and the color blends perfectly with the pecan and white oak next to it.
He also patched a broken strip of flooring so well, I can't see where he fixed it.
Rueben, and his crew use these fantastic floor sanders that don't throw dust everywhere (although it is still messy job). Staining the floors was a bit messier, and left me having to repaint my white baseboards. I don't know, but maybe they could have put up some plastic, or paper, to protect it.
H&R used a beautiful water based Bona finish on my floors and were out of the how in 2 days. Reasonable price, quality work.

Rueben did a fantastic job on our floors! The floors were old and typical pine from the 40s; we wanted dark floors with a nice gloss. Rueben explained the entire process before work, gave a mid-project walk through so that we could see the progress, a review before the final coat went on, and then showed us how to care for the floors. We were on a tight time line as we were moving and he and his team pulled the job off over a weekend!
We've had floors done in other houses and Rueben has the best company we've ever dealt with. He has given us beautiful floors, they turned out beautifully. He's easy to work with and very knowledgeable. We will be using H&R Hardwood in the future to install new floors in our carpeted room.
We are prepping our old home for sale, so we wanted everything to look great, but didn't want to break the bank. The original hardwoods had a lot of wear, warping, and had turned that "lovely" orange color.
We met with 5 different flooring companies. 4 companies said our floors were totaled and wanted us to rip out the original hardwoods. H & R was the only company that even wanted to attempt to save them. Reuben explained everything to us and any potential problems that might come up. We felt that even though everyone else said it wasn't possible, Reuben was knowledgeable and confident. He saved our floors!! He spent extra time to do it carefully and properly. The amount of pride he takes in his work is very refreshing to see. I wish all the other contractors we used had this same amount of care. He was also a pleasure to work with. No surprises.
Not only was H & R the more economical option (vs replacing floors), I couldn't stomach ripping out original hardwoods and replacing with laminates.
I hope our buyer appreciates these gorgeous floors! I should have done this when we lived in the home. When we put hardwoods in our new home, I will definitely use H & R Flooring.
Ruben is the most meticulous guy I've ever met. He walked me through the process (I'm a guy so have no idea about color, so I was nervous about making a bad decision). My daughter wanted certain "grains" of the wood by her door. Ruben is amazing - he chose the pieces of wood for my 16yr's door entrance, did a fantastic job on the floor - so much so - now Ive asked him to bid for all the other rooms. Nothing is too much trouble for this guy. His work is "Pure craftsman". I felt comfortable giving him and his team my alarm code. there was virtually no "dust" it was clear he had vacuumed the entire house and cleaned all the pieces (and he has a machine that produces little to no dust). He has no idea about marketing and didn't even ask me to write a reference, I know 4 other people in my area he has done work for and ALL of them recommend him unconditionally. He put down over 700sq ft of individual 2" planks, sanded stained, took out planks that he didn't like the grain. he explained that wood will change color over time (which made it really hard for me to choose a color) - I went with his recommendation - he mixed 2 stains together. Its not often that you meet a real craftsman that you KNOW will do an amazing job - and he did.
I LOVE the wood floors Ruben's company did for us! My fiance and I recently had Ruben and his crew refinish all the wood floors in the house we just bought in Travis Heights. The house is very old - built in the 1950's so the wood needed some major TLC. He was recommended to me by my realitor and I was very pleased with the work he did. He was very professional throughout the whole process and explained all of the options we had and made a recommendation for what would look best. He showed a few different samples so we could get a feel for the different colors. We have mainly oak floors but one room is a beautiful pine. He did a great job with both and it makes the house look 10 times better than it did before. Before it you could see stains and areas that were worn down. After sanding and refinishing it the floors look incredible. We are so happy with how they turned out and I would recommend Ruben to anyone. He is clearly an expert at what he does -you will see this very quickly once you start talking to him. He also charges a very reasonable rate for what he does. We will definitely use him again when we move in the future and need to refinish wood floors.
Austin, TX5.0 star rating8/15/2009Ruben and his team just finished installing an engineered wood floor in three rooms of my home. I am extremely happy with the quality of the installation. Ruben is very customer oriented and helped me understand what needed to be done to insure that the floor would hold up over time. I would definitely recommend H&R to my friends and to Architects that I work with professionally. The only regret I have is that I did not consult with Ruben before I made a decision on the type of material I used. His expertise would have been beneficial during the decision making process.

Ruben recoated 1,000 sq ft of engineered flooring for me, as well as fashioned some dividers to go between the flooring and some tile.
The floor was scratched up and too shiny for our tastes. The dividers were coming out and warped.
He did a wonderful job, working tirelessly on making the floor a beautiful semi-gloss satin finish using bona prep. The dividers took him extra time because of the difficulty of color matching. He had to use several colors til the stain of the dividers matched my flooring. The result really was remarkable - we loved how the floor had character but looked new at the same time. Ruben gave me extra advice on caring for the flooring as well as advice on how dividers could be made to fit better and longer in place.
Ruben was also pleasant to do business with, and I hope he is available in a few years when I have more flooring to put in.
I have been putting off having my antique long leaf pine floors in my full custom home, refinished for a while because I didn't know anyone I could trust with that wood. And, I really didn't want to deal with the mess involved with sanding floors. Had I known then how gorgeous they would turn out and, that there would be absolutely NO mess. I would have done it ages ago. I am so pleased. Rueben was extremely professional. He went through all the details of the job prior to starting, showed up on time, had new high tech equipment (especially important was the no dust sander!) charged an extremely fair price and did an amazing job. I don't have anymore floors to do but if I did I would absolutely have Rueben do them. I wish I could find this caliber of skill and customer service in all the work I get done. First Rate.

First Rate.
